Indigenous Services

Stories in the making.

Our relationship with Indigenous communities continues to grow. Through development partners, we have had the opportunity to work on diverse and successful projects across Ontario. We have seen these projects unfold, each one framed by goals unique to its community and strengthened by sustainability and the preservation of cultural values.  It has been a rewarding experience.

We have built a business on understanding our client’s markets and making their goals our own. It is a story of personal and professional commitment that we call The Crozier Way. We look forward to continuing our work with Indigenous Communities in Ontario and across Canada.

Our portfolio of Indigenous community work includes:

LONG LAKE #58 FIRST NATION, TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENTS – Crozier staff with Chief and Council Members, Elders, Community members, and school children to complete a Traditional Knowledge Assessment (TKA) and scoped Environmental Impact Assessment in support of the development of a solar park and warehouse within the First Nation lands. An additional Traditional Knowledge Assessment was completed for the Community to address proposed mining activities within the Traditional Land Use Area. Staff coordinated with Community members to arrange engagement sessions, Elders lunch, clan meetings, and a community dinner to achieve highest possible attendance for the Community engagement sessions. Community members were encouraged to share photographs, mapping, and stories to assist with the determination of historical and current use and enjoyment of l lands in order to determine the extent of the Traditional territory of the Long Lake #58 First Nation Community. The Traditional Knowledge information (important places, stories, photos, videos, etc.) gathered from the Community and second source data was entered into a protected GIS based mapping platform to create an evergreen set of mapping which can be used by current and future generations. The mapping and ongoing engagement has been made a part of the school curriculum in the Community.

BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION, TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT – Crozier staff collaborated with representatives of Batchewana First Nation to complete Community Engagement sessions to related to proposed mining activities in the Community’s Traditional Land Use area. Information gathered from Elders and Community members as well as second source data, was related to traditional land and water uses in the vicinity of two proposed mines. Staff held various sessions in the four Communities within Batchewana First Nation to gather Traditional knowledge information about important places, stories, photos, videos, etc. relating to use and enjoyment of the land. The information gathered from the Community and second source data was entered into a protected GIS based mapping platform to create an evergreen set of mapping which can be used by current and future generations and will help determine impacts from the proposed mines on the Traditional territory of Batchewana First Nation.

LONG LAKE SHORELINE CIVIL WORKS –  Crozier was retained by the Long Lake #58 First Nation in 2011 to provide engineering services associated with a three kilometer community shoreline restoration project. The scope of work included providing an engineered capping solution along the shoreline to address  contamination resulting from exposed arsenic laden stone historically used for erosion control along the community’s shoreline. Crozier provided engineering and development management services for the Community throughout the project from technical design and input, permitting requisition and construction review services.

ALDERVILLE SOLAR PARK – Construction of the 5.7 MW solar park, the first of its kind in Ontario to be 100% owned and operated by a First nation, began in Spring 2012.  Crozier was retained to act as Construction Manager for the Alderville First Nation who had undertaken the civil construction component, and act as their representative with the design-build multinational, Johnson Controls Inc.  Faced with adverse weather conditions and site challenges, the First Nation’s team worked through the winter and into the summer to complete all of the requisite civil work. Crozier’s team was on-site for the duration of the construction, and continued to assist the First Nation in obtaining all of the necessary approvals up to the commercial operation of the facility in October 2013.

MIGIZI MIIGWANAN EAGLE FEATHERS SECONDARY SCHOOL – In September 2012, Crozier, through its association with the Aboriginal Business Network and Two Row Architect, was selected to provide civil and structural engineering services for the detailed design of a 20,000 square foot secondary school building addition at the Long Lake #58 First Nation Community.  To meet aggressive timelines and in anticipation of unfavourable northern Ontario weather conditions, Crozier & Associates expedited designs in two weeks and provided construction management services. With the unilateral cooperation of all project parties, construction of the showcase addition was completed in Fall 2013.
