Acton Arena and Community Centre Expansion

The expansion and renovations to the Acton Arena & Community Centre in Halton Hills transformed the 15 year old facility, with an additional 50,000 sq. ft. of building area, a second NHL size ice pad, an open lobby with viewing to both rinks, a community room, spectator seats and exterior washrooms for use by the local sports teams.

Crozier & Associates, as part of the MacLennon Jaunkalns Miller Architects’ team, provided civil site services engineering for the twinning of the arena and community centre as part of phased arena construction program for the Town of Halton Hills.

The civil engineering design for the project included the addition of new parking, an expansion of the stormwater management program, the relocation of a sewage lift station and relocation of other exterior services. The stormwater management component targeted LEED Silver certification for this project.

Unique to this project is the storm drainage design which features two drainage outlets matched to discharge to pre-existing conditions and structured to balance the drainage between these outlets. Stormwater management control was achieved primarily through a 1,500 cu.m subsurface storage system below the parking lot.

The low elevation of the building relative to existing sanitary sewers and storm outlet presented special design challenges. A new duplex sewage pump station was designed by Crozier to lift sewage up to the local sanitary sewer. The use of a low profile Triton subsurface stormwater storage system reduced earth moving costs and protected the building and nearby Highway from flooding.

Design approval was achieved in six months and site works construction was completed in time for the 2015/2016 winter season.
